A massive thunder storm rolled in over Lauttasaari the other night. I had not yet fallen asleep when lighting and thunder followed by torrential rains washed over us. It was one in the morning. Very unusual to have thunderstorms here in the nighttime. Like a quick visit from the big world. And the images of Louisiana are awful.

Phew, what a day. Three intense meetings on three totally different subjects in different parts of town in one day. Makes me feel glad it is over. I have a dizzy feeling. And there are some things i could write, but don't wanna. This is after all a public space. I am amazed at the continous crossing of the border so many bloggers pass every day in their musings. Sure i like to be personal, and yes i can read some of it, but i also think some things are private. What do you think?

Most people seem to take pictures only at their holidays, and at birthdays and when someone marries. That makes for an odd archive of your life, doesn't it? Likewise most news, and a huge portion of blogs focuses on accidents and large disasters. No, i don't think we should pretend there aren't problems, but this hung-uppedness of the tragedy of life makes for a very odd archive of our lives, doesn't it?

There was a bad car accident yesterday evening at Lauttasaari, involving two Espoo buses, a lorry and a van on Länsiväylä. Some 30 people were injured, at least three of them seriously. We heard all the zillions of ambulance, fire brigade trucks and police vehicles trying to get to the spot of the accident. The traffic out west was blocked for hours, and cars were sent through Lauttasaari, honking their horns outside our window, and getting impatient.

So, work started again. I liked it at first, but then the server broke down, and hell broke loose. I blame it on the thunder storm that even cut the television broadcasts from the world championships here in Helsinki. At first it looked like we had managed without more than a fright, but on closer inspection our server room was damaged. So now i am shopping for a new one...

There are few things as sweet as the smell of a summer morning in August in Helsinki. The smell is sweet, and carries a hint of water. This smell brings me back to our sailing days, when we crossed the canals in France with a small boat. I think of it as the smell of the Continent, because that is what it reminds me of. When the weather peaks out in August we call it an Indian summer, and we sure are having one right now. It is a pleasure walking the kids to school and kindergarten in the morning hours, when everything feels possible. There is a silence, and a physical sense of wellbeing connected to it.

For years i felt like i belonged to some other place. I was born and grew up in Göteborg, on the west coast of Sweden. My father is Swedish, my mother is Finnish. I grew up with my mother, and i always identified with her Finnish roots. Every summer we went to Finland, i learned some (not much) Finnish, and felt like i belonged there.
Turning 20 i decided to move there. I went "home", or so i thought. I quickly discovered that they did not much care for me there. My family relations there were not especially happy to see me, nor did they keep much in touch. The swedish speaking minority was not very open, to put it mildly. I thought we would through a common language be able to communicate, but i soon found out that there was not much in common there.
In short, it would take years to adapt. Hence i have done exactly that, and found a place for me. Now having lived in Helsinki for close to 18 years i consider it "home". But as i walk these streets i realise i am no...

I am trying to get my home computer (now running Suse Linux 9.1 personal) to understand some windows programs i used to have in my computer (they ran fine on win 2K until the OS crashed and died for no appearent reason, and nothing i do makes it come alive again). I found VMWare, but found the price tag well beyond my scope. Then i found SourceForge.net: Bochs , which is a freeware version, doing the same thing, but i do not know if it is any good. Anyone have any hints?

Strange how these needs to jot it down all comes in droves. One two, and there I am again. Not long things like riverbend. Amazing. Still trying to fit these clothes on - I suppose. Not that long things scare me, they just don't seem to come naturally. some would say this indicates an empty life, devoid of things worth telling, but i have come to think the opposite is just as true. Sometimes you are so busy coping with the "small" things that there is not much time left for discussing it. It's true, i am less depressed now than ten years ago, much due to the fact that there is no time for it. The kids and making food, and working, and cleaning, and sometimes reading a little is just so much.
